About 25 years ago a builder by the name of Don Juan Ezquivel created one of the first hotels in Medano Beach, where the now Bahia Hotel and Beach Club stands. As an owner of a fishing fleet, the Gaviotas, Don Juan saw the opportunity to open his hotel up to more people, specifically other fishermen. Eventually the hotel became a favorite amongst fishermen and Don Juan developed a small campaign to benefit his hotel as well as his fishing fleet. Those who joined his fleet for 3 days, in return, could stay in Don Juan's hotel at no charge.
